We called it a disease. Very many of the diseases came from what we called germs. Remember that word—germs. A germ is a very small thing. It is like a woodtick, such as you find on the dogs in the spring of the year when they run in the forest. Only the germ is very small. Take forty mussel-shells, and by as many times larger was the germ when we looked at it through a microscope. And after that, we had other ways, by using what we called moving pictures, of making the forty-thousand-times germ many, many thousand times larger still. And thus we saw all these things which our eyes of themselves could not see. Take a grain of sand. Break it into ten pieces. Take one piece and break it into ten. Break one of those pieces into ten, and one of those into ten, and one of those into ten, and one of those into ten, and do it all day, and maybe, by sunset, you will have a piece as small as one of the germs." The boys were openly incredulous. They roamed an enormous tract of arid and semi-arid land between forty and eighty degrees south latitude, and bounded on the east and west by two large fertile tracts. Their headquarters lay in the southwest corner of this district, near the crossing of two of the so-called Martian canals.<br /><br />As the incubator had been placed far north of their own territory in a supposedly uninhabited and unfrequented area, we had before us a tremendous journey, concerning which I, of course, knew nothing.<br /><br />After our return to the dead city I passed several days in comparative idleness. On the day following our return all the warriors had ridden forth early in the morning and had not returned until just before darkness fell. As I later learned, they had been to the subterranean vaults in which the eggs were kept and had transported them to the incubator, which they had then walled up for another five years, and which, in all probability, would not be visited again during that period.

He heard that about half the members of the government had gathered at Birmingham, and that enormous quantities of high explosives were being prepared to be used in automatic mines across the Midland counties.<br /><br />He was also told that the Midland Railway Company had replaced the desertions of the first day's panic, had resumed traffic, and was running northward trains from St. Albans to relieve the congestion of the home counties. There was also a placard in Chipping Ongar announcing that large stores of flour were available in the northern towns and that within twenty-four hours bread would be distributed among the starving people in the neighbourhood. But this intelligence did not deter him from the plan of escape he had formed, and the three pressed eastward all day, and heard no more of the bread distribution than this promise. Nor, as a matter of fact, did anyone else hear more of it. That night fell the seventh star, falling upon Primrose Hill. It fell while Miss Elphinstone was watching, for she took that duty alternately with my brother. The streets were lined with beautiful houses all built of green marble and studded everywhere with sparkling emeralds. They walked over a pavement of the same green marble, and where the blocks were joined together were rows of emeralds, set closely, and glittering in the brightness of the sun. The window panes were of green glass; even the sky above the City had a green tint, and the rays of the sun were green.<br /><br />There were many people--men, women, and children--walking about, and these were all dressed in green clothes and had greenish skins. They looked at Dorothy and her strangely assorted company with wondering eyes, and the children all ran away and hid behind their mothers when they saw the Lion; but no one spoke to them. Many shops stood in the street, and Dorothy saw that everything in them was green. Green candy and green pop corn were offered for sale, as well as green shoes, green hats, and green clothes of all sorts. At one place a man was selling green lemonade, and when the children bought it Dorothy could see that they paid for it with green pennies.<br /><br />There seemed to be no horses nor animals of any kind; the men carried things around in little green carts, which they pushed before them. Everyone seemed happy and contented and prosperous.<br /><br />The Guardian of the Gates led them through the streets until they came to a big building, exactly in the middle of the City, which was the Palace of Oz, the Great Wizard. And when he recalled all the incidents of the tour, when he counted up the sums expended in pure loss and on his own account, when he thought that the immense stake, added to the heavy charges of this useless journey, would completely ruin Mr. Fogg, he overwhelmed himself with bitter self-accusations. Mr. Fogg, however, did not reproach him; and, on leaving the Cunard pier, only said: "We will consult about what is best to-morrow. Come."<br /><br />The party crossed the Hudson in the Jersey City ferryboat, and drove in a carriage to the St. Nicholas Hotel, on Broadway. Rooms were engaged, and the night passed, briefly to Phileas Fogg, who slept profoundly, but very long to Aouda and the others, whose agitation did not permit them to rest.<br /><br />The next day was the 12th of December. From seven in the morning of the 12th to a quarter before nine in the evening of the 21st there were nine days, thirteen hours, and forty-five minutes. No turbaned Turk, no hired Venetian or Malay, could have smote him with more seeming malice. Small reason was there to doubt, then, that ever since that almost fatal encounter, Ahab had cherished a wild vindictiveness against the whale, all the more fell for that in his frantic morbidness he at last came to identify with him, not only all his bodily woes, but all his intellectual and spiritual exasperations. The White Whale swam before him as the monomaniac incarnation of all those malicious agencies which some deep men feel eating in them, till they are left living on with half a heart and half a lung. That intangible malignity which has been from the beginning; to whose dominion even the modern Christians ascribe one-half of the worlds; which the ancient Ophites of the east reverenced in their statue devil;—Ahab did not fall down and worship it like them; but deliriously transferring its idea to the abhorred white whale, he pitted himself, all mutilated, against it. All that most maddens and torments; all that stirs up the lees of things; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Moby Dick. He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it.<br /><br />It is not probable that this monomania in him took its instant rise at the precise time of his bodily dismemberment. Then, in darting at the monster, knife in hand, he had but given loose to a sudden, passionate, corporal animosity; and when he received the stroke that tore him, he probably but felt the agonizing bodily laceration, but nothing more. Yet, when by this collision forced to turn towards home, and for long months of days and weeks, Ahab and anguish lay stretched together in one hammock, rounding in mid winter that dreary, howling Patagonian Cape; then it was, that his torn body and gashed soul bled into one another; and so interfusing, made him mad. That it was only then, on the homeward voyage, after the encounter, that the final monomania seized him, seems all but certain from the fact that, at intervals during the passage, he was a raving lunatic; and, though unlimbed of a leg, yet such vital strength yet lurked in his Egyptian chest, and was moreover intensified by his delirium, that his mates were forced to lace him fast, even there, as he sailed, raving in his hammock. In a strait-jacket, he swung to the mad rockings of the gales. And, when running into more sufferable latitudes, the ship, with mild stun'sails spread, floated across the tranquil tropics, and, to all appearances, the old man's delirium seemed left behind him with the Cape Horn swells, and he came forth from his dark den into the blessed light and air; even then, when he bore that firm, collected front, however pale, and issued his calm orders once again; and his mates thanked God the direful madness was now gone; even then, Ahab, in his hidden self, raved on. Human madness is oftentimes a cunning and most feline thing. When you think it fled, it may have but become transfigured into some still subtler form. Ahab's full lunacy subsided not, but deepeningly contracted; like the unabated Hudson, when that noble Northman flows narrowly, but unfathomably through the Highland gorge. But, as in his narrow-flowing monomania, not one jot of Ahab's broad madness had been left behind; so in that broad madness, not one jot of his great natural intellect had perished. That before living agent, now became the living instrument. If such a furious trope may stand, his special lunacy stormed his general sanity, and carried it, and turned all its concentred cannon upon its own mad mark; so that far from having lost his strength, Ahab, to that one end, did now possess a thousand fold more potency than ever he had sanely brought to bear upon any one reasonable object.

We were approaching another range of mountains at the time, and when we reached them, instead of winding across them through some high-flung pass we entered a mighty natural tunnel—a series of labyrinthine grottoes, dark as Erebus.</p> <p>The guards had no torches or light of any description. In fact we had seen no artificial light or sign of fire since we had entered Pellucidar. In a land of perpetual noon there is no need of light above ground, yet I marveled that they had no means of lighting their way through these dark, subterranean passages. So we crept along at a snail's pace, with much stumbling and falling—the guards keeping up a singsong chant ahead of us, interspersed with certain high notes which I found always indicated rough places and turns.</p>

Melihat kondisi tersebut, bagaimana nasib ekspor Indonesia ke negara Paman Sam saat ini?<br /> <br /> Memang diketahui pasar AS merupakan salah satu pasar terbesar dari ekspor Indonesia sejauh ini, khususnya dari komoditas berbasis agro seperti minyak sawit mentah (Crude Palm Oil/CPO). Namun, para pelaku usaha masih menilai kejadian shutdown AS belum menjadi ancaman serius.<br /> <br /> Demikian optimisme disampaikan Ketua Umum Asosiasi Pengusaha Indonesia (Apindo), Sofjan Wanandi di Jakarta, Kamis (3/10). Menurut dia, tutupnya sebagian besar kantor pemerintahan di AS belum memberikan ancaman serius bagi perekonomian nasional karena masih ada pasar besar lainnya seperti India dan China.<br /> <br /> “Selain AS, kita masih punya pasar India dan China yang masih menjadi pasar terbesar Indonesia sejauh ini, khususnya untuk komoditas sawit," jelas Sofjan ketika dikonfirmasi.<br /> <br /> Bagi Indonesia, AS merupakan salah satu pasar ekspor nonmigas terbesar kedua setelah China. Pada Juli 2013, ekspor nonmigas Indonesia ke AS mencapai US$1.482,3 juta. Sementara nilai ekspor ke China mencapai US$1.688,9 juta, dan Jepang yang mencapai US$1.390,6 juta.<br /> <br /> Seperti yang ramai diberitakan sebelumnya, pemerintah AS akhirnya menutup sementara (shutdown) layanan pemerintah. Langkah itu menyusul serangkaian perdebatan panjang dan manuver politik dari Parlemen, Senat, dan Gedung Putih yang akhirnya gagal mencapai kata sepakat atas persoalan kebuntuan anggaran negara.<br /> <br /> Hingga Senin (1/10) malam lalu waktu setempat, Kongres AS gagal mencapai kata sepakat atas kelanjutan anggaran rutin pemerintah Obama. Shutdown ini merupakan kali pertama terjadi selama hampir dua dekade. Defisit Neraca Pedagangan Diperkirakan 4 Miliar Dollar AS

Kementerian Perdagangan memperkirakan defisit kumulatif neraca perdagangan hingga Desember 2013 sebesar 4 miliar dollar Amerika Serikat (AS). <br /> <br /> Sebagaimana diketahui, setelah beberapa bulan mengalami defisit, neraca perdagangan Indonesia mencatat surplus pada Agustus 2013 sebesar 132,4 juta dollar Amerika Serikat (AS). <br /> <br /> Wakil Menteri Perdagangan, Bayu Krisnamurthi di kantornya, Rabu (2/10/2013) mengakui pihaknya tidak terlalu yakin defisit tahunan bisa ditekan di bawah 4 miliar dollar AS, mengingat ketidakpastian Washington DC. tersebut. <br /> <br /> “Sampai hari ini dampaknya ke pasar tradisional belum ada, karena bisnis masih berjalan. Tapi kita tidak tahu ke depan,” kata dia.<br /> <br /> Bayu mengatakan kinerja ekspor bisa didorong melalui komunikasi dengan pelaku bisnis di negara pasar, dan diharapkan indeks harga komoditas tidak akan jatuh.<br /> <br /> Ia pun menjelaskan mengapa pemerintah mematok defisit di level 4 miliar dollar AS, kumulatif Desember 2013. Menurutnya, neraca pedagangan Agustus 2013 yang mengalami surplus lebih disebabkan penurunan impor, dan bukan kenaikan ekspor.<br /> <br /> Sebagai informasi, surplus neraca perdagangan Agustus 2013 disebabkan penurunan impor yang cukup drastis sebesar 25,2 persen (<em>month of month</em>), sedangkan ekspor juga tercatat mengalami sedikit penurunan sebesar 12,8 persen (MoM). <br /> <br /> Konsekuensinya, untuk menjaga neraca pedagangan agar sampai akhir tahun defisitnya tak lebih dari 4 miliar dollar AS, pemerintah akan melakukan diversifikasi pasar dan komoditas ekspor. <br /> <br /> “Sekarang kita hadapi ketidakpastian di AS. Ini harus kita cermati, sehingga kita tidak terlalu optimis berlebihan. Namun tetap diupayakan (menekan impor), dan diverifikasi pasar itu bukan omong kosong tapi juga terus dilakukan,” pungkas Bayu.<br />
